The Web standards set out on this Web site apply to University Web sites (with few exceptions to be detailed below). A University Web site is one that used/uses SIU resources—people or funds—to create, host, or maintain the Web site (including to pay a third party to create or host the Web site), regardless of the server (university or private) or domain name (e.g., .edu, .com, .gov, etc.). Such sites generally would serve the teaching, research, and service mission of SIU, and they certainly would include college, departmental, administrative, and
Exceptions
Social networking sites are exempt from the Web standards in this document.
Some Web sites may involve SIU resources and may further SIU’s mission, but they may—for example—relate to a larger external organization that has its own standards. Such sites may be exempt from some of the standards outlined here. The SIU University Web Standards Committee will decide exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING UNIVERSITY RELATED ORGANIZATIONS (UROS)
It is suggested that UROs follow guidelines set in this document but it is not required. The definition of a URO is defined in the Illinois Legislative Audit Commissions University Guidelines of 1982 as Amended 1997, Chapter VI. To become an official URO an organization must be approved as such by the SIU Board of Trustees.
Responsibility
It is the responsibility of the individual(s) charged with maintenance of University websites (departments, units, or individuals) to maintain and comply with SIU University Web Standards.
Compliance
Material that violates local, state or federal laws (including accessibility laws), SIU Policies, SIU Student Conduct Code and/or University Web Standards set in this document will require immediate correction or removal.
It is expected that persons responsible for University web pages will maintain Web sites that reflect the mission and goals of the University and upon notification of violation of local, state or federal laws and/or University Web Standards, that person will take action to correct or remove such content. Failure to comply with SIU University Web Standards set in this document will result in (at minimum) a warning from SIU Web Services, and persistent and/or serious non-compliance will result in disconnection from the University homepage and other top-level pages, as well as removal from University web servers.
